With stocks swinging wildly, it's easy to panic. The word "panic" comes from the Greek god who startled people with loud outbursts in frightening places. Fear is a defense mechanism that comes out when threatened. When fear leaps from one to another, it turns into panic. Scientists say you can catch other people's emotions as easily as catching a cold. So what should you do? Economist Jason Zweig suggests: Break the circle. Hang out with folks who don't obsess over the market. Turn off the tube. Stick to your financial goals. Resist acting on gut instead of thinking. Take a deep breath. Calm yourself and fight the herd mentality.
